DHS Theatre Night Speech from Susan Gorman to Faith May 20 2016 I avoided writing your speech not because I didn t know what to say but because it meant it was time for me to take a step a step back We ve done a lot together over the past four years and now it s time for me to take a step back and watch you run One of your greatest qualities is your ability to see the truth and be willing to work You ve been blessed with many gifts A stunning beauty both on stage and on camera supportive parents opportunities just to name a few But it s your ability to see that you have to continue to grow that I admire the most I ve been able to direct coach work with you because you want this so badly and you are willing to put in the time and effort to Get out of your head Stop acting Be vulnerable Push diction Live in the moment Don t worry about being pretty Get closer together but further apart Connect Listen You ll do it so I ll say it and that s nice for a director Sometimes we have to sugarcoat I don t have to sugarcoat with you I learned that you listened and remembered Whether it was my comment about your heels or the placement of your consonants You are tough and it takes tough to learn One thing I won t step back from is the memories the memories we ve shared The breakthroughs and I don t just mean the ironing board over your head in Almost Maine The summer programs at Carnegie and Northwestern The hugs of support the tears of disappointment the parking lot at Dairy Queen my Starbucks order slap happy notes and spring show tech I know you ll continue to learn at Rutgers Take it all in and sort out what you need You know what is the truth and you re not afraid of it yet Don t be afraid Do it try it You ve never backed down and you ve never backed down from something that s hard Your best steps are in front of you Take them 16
